Why choosing the right food is so important for puppies

Puppies burn through energy quickly—sometimes twice as much as adult dogs—so they need a diet that can keep up with their rapid growth. That means food that’s rich in calories and protein to build strong muscles and fuel endless zoomies, packed with essential nutrients to support healthy bones, brain development, and immunity, and easy to chew so it’s gentle on sensitive tummies. Pure ticks all the boxes, with high-quality protein, brain-boosting omega-3, and natural ingredients that nurture healthy growth from day one. Plus, because you can control how much water to add, it’s perfectly suited to little mouths and baby teeth.

How much should I feed my puppy?

Every dog is different - their age, breed, energy levels and health conditions all play a part. That’s why we tailor everything, from the recipe to the portions.

Most puppies will often need more calories, and therefore more scoops of Pure, to start with due to their higher energy levels and to fuel all of the growing they need to do. But as they grow and settle, you’ll likely see their portions - and your monthly cost - go down too.

How often should I feed my puppy?

Younger puppies should always be fed smaller amounts, more regularly, and this decreases in frequency as they get older. If you’re not sure how often to feed your puppy then here is a rough guide:

  • Around 2 months old (usually still with mum): 4–6 small meals a day
  • 2–3 months: 4 meals a day
  • 4–6 months: 2–3 meals a day
  • 6 months and up: 2 meals a day (depending on the breed)

Pure makes it simple. You can split their daily scoops however works best to keep them fuelled, happy and (hopefully) sleeping through the night.

How can I check my puppy is gaining weight?

Keep an eye on how your pup is growing by weighing them regularly and checking their body shape. If you’re ever unsure, your vet or breed club can help.

We’re here too. With our monthly health check-ins, you can tell us how they’re getting on - whether they’re looking lean or a bit too cuddly - and we’ll tweak their plan to suit.

Treats and training

Healthy doesn’t have to mean no treats - you’ve just got to be a bit choosy.

Our range of puppy-friendly treats and dental sticks are perfect for rewarding good behaviour, keeping those baby teeth clean, and helping soothe teething pains - which might just save your skirting boards, slippers or sofa legs from a nibble or two.

Feeding methods

Lick mats and puzzle bowls are brilliant for puppies - they slow things down, help digestion, and make mealtimes more fun and engaging.

Because you control the texture with Pure, it’s easy to get it just right for these tools. It can also help encourage eating when teething makes them a bit fussy.

Top tip: Enriched feeding can be a game-changer for keeping your puppy calm, focused, and content at mealtimes.

When can puppies start eating puppy food?

Puppies can start eating solid food from around 3-4 weeks old, which is when weaning usually begins. By the time they’re ready to come home with you at 8 weeks, they should be fully weaned and happily eating a complete puppy food.
